CAREER OPPORTUNITIES FOR PHARMACISTS AND THE CONTRIBUTION FOR PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT
Pharmacist is one of the strategic profession as it could have lots of choices for their future career. It could facilitates lots of roles and functions in some working areas, such as in clinical and communnity pharmacy, in the government and regulatory sectors, and also in industrial world. Therefore, it was not a surprise if the number of pharmacy scholar is increasing nowadays. In Indonesia, there are 63 pharmacy colleges which graduate more than 3.500 pharmacists in each years. This situation could enhance the number of pharmacist in Indonesia become 27.000 people and exceed the needs of pharmacist number in Indonesia. Thus, by the abundant number of pharmacist in Indonesia, pharmacist should be spread in various field and do their job optimally.
One of the sector which give lots of chance for pharmacist to be developed in their career is pharmaceutical industry. Based on the previous study, pharmaceutical industry is a kind of industry which has innovative and dynamic product development in order to fulfill the needs of the society. The research and development activity is very crucial and closely related to the needs of innovative products it has to produce. Therefore based on the data showed there are 8 pharmaceutical industries out of 20 industries which have the highest research funding, such as Novartis, Roche Holding, Pfizer, Merck, Johnson&Johnson, Glaxo Smith Kline, Astra Zeneca, and Sanofi (Bloomberg Data, 2013). Bloomsberg data showed that the products of pharmaceutical industry have higher value of innovation than the products from software and internet industry products, even from the automobile industry. This showed that pharmaceutical industry is a sector which is reliable and promising sector, especially for a pharmacist to be involved.
Once the pharmacist involved in the pharmaceutical industry, they will have a wide opportunity to apply their knowledge during colleges. The pharmaceutical industry will need pharmacist which has clinical and practical knowledge especially for research and development of their product. The role of pharmacist are not only responsible for the invention of a new products, make the best formulation, but also the do the clinical trial, do the bioavailability and bioequivalency (BA/BE) screening, and control and assure the quality of a products based on the evidence based.
Pharmaceutical industry career also offer some chances for pharmacist to do the multidisciplinary work. As the pharmaceutical industry is closely related to wide-sector profession collaboration, it will give lots of opportunity for a pharmacist to growth lateral and upward. A pharmacist could be a medical communicator which provides evidence based information of a product for both the medical profession and also to the non medical profession.
In order to support the commercial properties of a product, a pharmacist not only plays a role in analyzing the market condition in the past and in the future but also providing the sales material and a good product advertising. Being a pharmacist in pharmaceutical industry also could emphasize their career through the drug regulatory affair.
